First aid

What to do while help is coming

Short, plain steps you can follow with one hand. Only help if it's safe for you.

Blood is flowing fast or soaking through cloth.

Heavy bleeding

  1. 1Put on gloves or use a clean nylon bag over your hand if you can.
  2. 2Press firmly on the wound with a clean cloth — don't lift it to check.
  3. 3If blood soaks through, add more cloth on top and keep pressing.
  4. 4Raise the injured arm or leg above the heart if nothing is broken.
  5. 5Keep the person lying down and warm until help arrives.

Don't

  • Don't remove anything stuck in the wound — press around it.
  • Don't use sand, ash, toothpaste or herbs on the wound.
